Storstac Installs Hamilton Shipping Container House

Storstac is excited to announce that we have successfully fabricated and installed the Downtown Hamilton Shipping Container House. This precedent-setting build nicknamed the Hamilton Shipping Container House was installed in just EIGHT HOURS and consists of eight 40′ high cube shipping containers sitting on top of a solid concrete foundation. Designed by Toronto Architect Jason Halter, the house has been custom designed to suit his clients’ specific tastes which Jason describes as being “iconoclastic”. Although the unmodified shipping containers themselves are fabricated in China (China manufactures the large majority of new shipping containers) all of the modification work (Cut and framing of all window and door openings, interior openings, structural reinforcements, window installation and exterior paint) were undertaken at our Toronto, Canada modification facility. Unlike a number of shipping container homes built around the world, this one will not be clad with any additional materials. Instead, the containers Corten Steel corrugated walls will remain naked, and they were painted (In Storstac’s dedicated paint shop) brick brown; allowing the house to better blend in with the surrounding Victorian era homes. The rugged industrial look of this shipping container home pays homage to the fact that the home is located in “Steel Town”, but a number of subtle architectural design elements (like the seven walkout balconies that will utilize the shipping container doors as the balconies side walls) will make this shipping container home stand out from most others. Until now there has only been a hand full of container homes built in Canada, almost all of which have been erected outside of cities urban centres, mostly in rural areas as cottages. As stated earlier in this article, the Hamilton shipping container home was modified and fabricated at Storstac‘s modification facility located at 90 North Queen Street in Toronto, Canada and will rely strictly on 100% Canadian steel (for framing and modified structural work), paint, windows doors and most importantly local labor. Buying a Shipping Container for Storage

Originally used to move cargo from one part of the world to another, shipping containers have since been modified for countless applications. Modified shipping containers save been used to create anything and everything from public storage facilities, mobile offices, equipment enclosures, retail restaurants, and yes, even houses…but what makes a shipping container an ideal storage solution for your overflowing warehouse or expanding storage needs?

  1. Wind & Water Tight – Well, first off , shipping containers are wind and water tight steel boxes. They are intended to travel on oceans, and thus, have been designed in a way that keeps water out, so that the cargo stays dry. This principle perfectly transitions over to your growing storage needs. What ever you put inside your storage container, you want it to stay dry. Period.
  2. All Steel Construction – Second is security and the strength of the steel shipping container. Made of corten steel (a weathering steel) shipping containers are strong and designed to take everything that mother nature throws at them.
  3. Security – Dry cargo shipping containers are all corten steel, including the container barn doors. Accompanied with a shipping container lock box, a shipping container provides you with a secure box that, unless someone is really determined, is difficult to gain access to (at least with out drawing a lot of attention and noise). Quick smash and grab break ins are usually a crime of opportunity, and an all steel shipping container takes that opportunity away. Lastly, shipping containers are modular and mobile.
  4. Portable – A simple tilt and load tuck (a flat bed tow truck if you will) is all you need to move around a 20′ shipping container (a 40′ shipping container is moved with the same principle, but will come on a big rig 18 wheeler). This means that your storage container is not a permanent investment. You can always add storage containers to grow your storage needs, or move them out if you no longer need them. If you relocate to another location, you can simply pick up your container and take it with you (or leave it behind if you choose).

Storstac to build Hamilton Shipping Container House

Storstac is excited to announce that in just a few weeks we will begin fabrication of Canada’s first shipping container house to be permanently located in a major city’s (Hamilton’s) downtown core right here at our Toronto shipping container fabrication facility. This precedent setting build nicknamed the Hamilton Shipping Container House is already BUILDING PERMIT APPROVED and will consist of eight 40′ shipping containers sitting on top of a solid concrete block foundation. Designed by Toronto Architect Jason Halter of Wonder Inc, the house has been custom designed to suit his clients specific tastes which Jason describes as being “iconolastic”. Although the shipping containers themselves are fabricated in China (as China is the only place in the world where shipping containers are fabricated) all of the modification work and materials used for this project will be made in Canada. Unlike most shipping container homes built around the world, this one will not be clad with any additional materials. Instead, the containers Corten steel corrugated walls will remain naked, and they will be painted brick brown; allowing the house to better blend in with the surrounding Victorian era homes. The rugged industrial look of this shipping container home pays homage to the fact that it will be located in “Steel Town”, but a number of subtle architectural design elements (like the six walk out balconies that will utilize the shipping container doors as the balconies side walls) will make this shipping container home stand out from most others. Until now there have only been a hand full of container homes built in Canada, most of  which have been erected in rural areas as cottages. The vast majority Canada’s shipping container homes/cottages are pre-fabricated builds that are modified and built in china. This is problematic because they use Chinese steel and parts which provides the end user with a low-quality, inferior product that is unlikely to stand any real test of time. As stated earlier in this article, the Hamilton shipping container home will be modified and fabricated at Storstac’s modification facility located at 90 North Queen Street in Toronto and will rely strictly on 100% Canadian steel, paint, windows doors and most importantly local labor. Follow us on Instagram (@storstac_inc) as we will be closely covering and updating followers as this project develops and progresses. Installation of the Hamilton Shipping Container House will take place in June of this year.

Modified Container Office Space

Storstac custom fabricates mobile container office space out of 10′, 20′ and 40′ modified shipping containers. Our mobile office containers are some of the best made container offices in the industry and feature everything you would find in a conventional office space. Our modified container offices are fully insulated and feature a 100amp breaker panel, lights, heaters, air conditioning, wall plugs, phone jacks, two windows, and one man door. Once you step inside one of our modified container offices you will think that you just walked into a traditional brick and mortar building.

The advantages of a Storstac modified container office over a traditional trailer office provided by the other guys are easy to see. Our modified container offices are built within an all steel shipping container or sea can. The advantage of building an office inside of a modified shipping container is that they provide you with a sturdy, all steel structure that will outlast a trailer office multiple times over. Traditionally, trailer offices are made of all wood construction. The all wood construction can cause the trailer to smell and it causes the trailer to be extremely flimsy which significantly shortens the shelf life of the office. The Storstac modified container office is also placed at ground level. The man door is only 6″ off of the ground, which means there are no stairs or steps required to get in and out of the office. This makes winter maintenance very easy and straight forward. Trailer offices always require stairs, and they are usually made of wood. This can cause unnecessary tripping hazards and makes winter maintenance more difficult.

Buy one of our modified container offices that are pre-fabricated, or have one built to your specifications.

For more information about our 10′, 20′ and 40′ modified shipping container offices you can reach us at 416-231-9100 or come see one for yourself at our Head Office/ Depot @ 90 North Queen Street, Etobicoke Ontario.

Shipping Container Modification – Custom Made Portable Buildings

(Toronto, Ontario) Here at Storstac, we have been modifying shipping containers for over 40 years. We haven’t just been modifying shipping containers for over 40 years, we’ve been pioneering industry firsts that have gone on to change the way we live, work and interact with one another. Through the 1980’s and 90’s the company’s President (Vincent) utilized shipping container modification’s to house the electrical equipment for thousands of cell towers right across Canada. These towers, which are still in use today, now provide Bell, Rogers and Tellus with cell phone coverage that stretches from coast to coast. When a standard ISO shipping container couldn’t be utilized for a site, custom built portable buildings were built constructed to meet the customers needs. Although these portable buildings may sometimes resemble shipping containers (corner castings, corrugated panels ect), they are made from the ground up to meet the customers specifications.  The two images below demonstrate the wide range of applications custom built portable buildings can be utilized for. The first image is a portable building used to house a vast array of electronics for an on site power station. Custom built from the ground up, this unit was built to meet the customers demanding electronic’s specifications. The second image depicts and completely different use for our custom built portable buildings. This green custom built kiosk was the just delivered to a customers restaurant in downtown Toronto which he intends on using as a raw bar that will be serving various kinds of raw seafood. Again, completely custom built from the ground up, this unit was built to capture the look and feel of a typical iso shipping container. Yet at the same time has some striking design elements (like the slanted roof line) added into the design while also being sized to fit within the existing patio area (something a standard container would not have been able to achieve). These are just two examples of how a custom built portable building might be more suitable then a standard iso shipping container for your next project. Feel free to email, call or drop by anytime to discuss how we can put our modification experience to work for you.
