Buying a Shipping Container for Storage

Originally used to move cargo from one part of the world to another, shipping containers have since been modified for countless applications. Modified shipping containers save been used to create anything and everything from public storage facilities, mobile offices, equipment enclosures, retail restaurants, and yes, even houses…but what makes a shipping container an ideal storage solution for your overflowing warehouse or expanding storage needs?

  1. Wind & Water Tight – Well, first off , shipping containers are wind and water tight steel boxes. They are intended to travel on oceans, and thus, have been designed in a way that keeps water out, so that the cargo stays dry. This principle perfectly transitions over to your growing storage needs. What ever you put inside your storage container, you want it to stay dry. Period.
  2. All Steel Construction – Second is security and the strength of the steel shipping container. Made of corten steel (a weathering steel) shipping containers are strong and designed to take everything that mother nature throws at them.
  3. Security – Dry cargo shipping containers are all corten steel, including the container barn doors. Accompanied with a shipping container lock box, a shipping container provides you with a secure box that, unless someone is really determined, is difficult to gain access to (at least with out drawing a lot of attention and noise). Quick smash and grab break ins are usually a crime of opportunity, and an all steel shipping container takes that opportunity away. Lastly, shipping containers are modular and mobile.
  4. Portable – A simple tilt and load tuck (a flat bed tow truck if you will) is all you need to move around a 20′ shipping container (a 40′ shipping container is moved with the same principle, but will come on a big rig 18 wheeler). This means that your storage container is not a permanent investment. You can always add storage containers to grow your storage needs, or move them out if you no longer need them. If you relocate to another location, you can simply pick up your container and take it with you (or leave it behind if you choose).

Storstac Builds Rogers Shipping Container Fan Hub Complex

Storstac is excited to announce that we custom fabricated the the Rogers Shipping Container Fan Hub Complex for the 2016 Rogers Cup and 2016 World Cup Of Hockey right here in Toronto. Working in conjunction with Juiceworks Exhibits (based in Toronto), we assisted in co-designing the Rogers Fan Hub Shipping Container Complex to be one of the most spectacular, solidly built shipping container structures ever commissioned. Engineered in-house (here at Storstac) by our engineering team, we created and built this modular container structure out of six 40′ high cube modified shipping containers right here at our Toronto, Canada shipping container fabrication facility (using Canadian steel, parts and paint).

The main floor is comprised of three 40′ modified  shipping containers  that are joined together to create 960sq’ of open concept entertainment space. Fully insulated, air conditioned and heated (ready for the cold/hot Canadian winters/summers), the first floor of the Rogers Shipping Container “Fan Hub” provides visitors with various interactive activity zones, couches, charging stations, tv’s and even an information desk. Make your way up to the second floor of the Rogers Shipping Container “Fan Hub” via the (interior) spiral stair case and you find yourself  inside a single modified 40′ shipping container that leads out to the roof top balcony. Utilizing the base of two 40′ modified shipping containers, we  created 740sq’ of roof top patio space allowing visitors to relax on one of  multiple couches and or chairs, creating a relaxing space with a great view of its surroundings. We even custom built two shipping container inspired ping pong tables for guests to enjoy outside (Design by Juiceworks). Storstac Building Toronto’s First Shipping Container House

Storstac is excited to announce that along with The Hamilton Shipping Container House (which will be the first permanent shipping container house in Canada to be located in a major cities downtown core), we are also currently fabricating TORONTO’s FIRST SHIPPING CONTAINER HOUSE which will be permanently located in the heart of Downtown Toronto (on Queen @ Bathurst), right here at our Toronto shipping container fabrication facility. This precedent setting build nicknamed the Harlem Underground Shipping Container House (as it will expand the current living quarters that are part of the same building that Harlem Underground Restaurant is located) is already BUILDING PERMIT APPROVED and will consist of three 20′ High Cube shipping containers sitting on top of a solid concrete foundation. Although the shipping containers themselves are fabricated in China (as China is the only place in the world where shipping containers are fabricated) all of the modification work will be carried out at our fabrication shop here in Toronto, and all materials used for this project will be made in Canada. Storstac has been tasked with engineering and completing all of the shipping container modifications, paint and steel-work for this Toronto shipping container home. The Toronto shipping container home modifications include cutting and framing all window, door and interior openings, custom paint and a number of structural reinforcements where required. The Toronto shipping container home will arrive on site and will be installed by Storstac over the course of just a few hours.

For projects like this Storstac rely’s on its 450+ years of combined shipping container modification experience (Dating as far back to 1971) ensuring all modifications meet and exceed strict building code requirements, as well as ensuring the shipping container modifications last more then a lifetime. Modifications  such as this are made possible with the help of Storstac’s President, who, over his carrier (which began in 1971)  has been part of more then 10,000+ shipping container modifications. Expected completion of the project is Summer 2016. Storstac to build Hamilton Shipping Container House

Storstac is excited to announce that in just a few weeks we will begin fabrication of Canada’s first shipping container house to be permanently located in a major city’s (Hamilton’s) downtown core right here at our Toronto shipping container fabrication facility. This precedent setting build nicknamed the Hamilton Shipping Container House is already BUILDING PERMIT APPROVED and will consist of eight 40′ shipping containers sitting on top of a solid concrete block foundation. Designed by Toronto Architect Jason Halter of Wonder Inc, the house has been custom designed to suit his clients specific tastes which Jason describes as being “iconolastic”. Although the shipping containers themselves are fabricated in China (as China is the only place in the world where shipping containers are fabricated) all of the modification work and materials used for this project will be made in Canada. Unlike most shipping container homes built around the world, this one will not be clad with any additional materials. Instead, the containers Corten steel corrugated walls will remain naked, and they will be painted brick brown; allowing the house to better blend in with the surrounding Victorian era homes. The rugged industrial look of this shipping container home pays homage to the fact that it will be located in “Steel Town”, but a number of subtle architectural design elements (like the six walk out balconies that will utilize the shipping container doors as the balconies side walls) will make this shipping container home stand out from most others. Until now there have only been a hand full of container homes built in Canada, most of  which have been erected in rural areas as cottages. The vast majority Canada’s shipping container homes/cottages are pre-fabricated builds that are modified and built in china. This is problematic because they use Chinese steel and parts which provides the end user with a low-quality, inferior product that is unlikely to stand any real test of time. As stated earlier in this article, the Hamilton shipping container home will be modified and fabricated at Storstac’s modification facility located at 90 North Queen Street in Toronto and will rely strictly on 100% Canadian steel, paint, windows doors and most importantly local labor. Follow us on Instagram (@storstac_inc) as we will be closely covering and updating followers as this project develops and progresses. Installation of the Hamilton Shipping Container House will take place in June of this year.

Shipping Container Markets

Shipping container markets have become quite popular over the last 10 years right around the world… and for good reason. From the DeKalb Market in Brooklyn, to Boxpark in London to the ReStart Container Market in New Zealand; shipping container markets / malls have been “popping” up right around the world. Over the past 5 years Storstac has been pivotal  in helping  Toronto join-in on the shipping container market craze; and for good reason. Storstac has been host to all of Toronto’s Permanent and semi-permanent container markets. The shipping container market at Scadding Court community center at the corner of Dundas Street and Bathurst Street in the heat of downtown Toronto has been supplied wholly by Storstac. This market is precedent setting as it provides tenements with affordable rents that allow them to grow there small businesses that were previously based in their homes to a “brick-and-mortar” location. The market is meant to be both a permanent home for some tenants, as well as a stepping stone that allows other tenants the opportunity to test the marketplace with their products before growing to a larger location.  The market has become famous for its ethnically diverse and delicious “street foods” and for its locally produced hand made goods. Storstac has also been responsible for the Westside market place that was live for the summer of 2015 at the corner of Bathrust and Front Street, as well as the Winter Market Place that is currently ongoing at the Evergreen Brickworks on the north east end of Downtown Toronto. Shipping container markets have a host of benefits that traditional brick-and-mortar and tent markets cannot provide.

Modular: Shipping container markets can be arranged, re-arranged, and relocated in an instant. This modular aspect allows container markets to grow, shrink, and move rapidly depending on current market conditions.

Wind and Water Tight: Another advantage of using shipping containers for markets is that they are solid steel boxes. This means that when its raining, snowing, or windy, retailers don’t have to close down for the day. The container is solidly sitting on the ground and isn’t phased by harsh weather conditions.

Security: Depending on how the individual containers are designed, they can go from having a large glass entrance in the day time when there open, to being a fully sealed steel box at night when there closed. This allows container markets to be placed in more remote locations where land may be under utilized, or placed right in the heat of a city’s downtown core in an empty developers future condominium site.

If you have any questions about starting your very own shipping container market or mall, NO ONE in Canada has more experience at designing, fabricating and deploying shipping container markets/malls then Storstac.
